Last week there were some new developments on the ICAO Intensive Preparatory Course that Mr. Colin teaches at the EJ Escola de Aeronáutica in São Paulo.

Specific tests for helicopter pilots were used in the simulations at the end of the course for the first time. It was a great success.

Since the beginning of October 2017 helicopter pilots have been able to choose between making a fixed wing test or a rotary wing test. Helicopter pilots aren’t at a disadvantage anymore as they now have their own test with questions, audios and pictures more appropriate for their day to day activities.

On the last day of the intensive course we do simulations as the final preparation for the ICAO test. Now helicopter pilots who do the course will also have the option of doing a simulation tailor-made for them.

New audio situations from Part 2 and Part 3 have been recorded and there are also new pictures for Part 4.

Mister Colin's Intensive Course at EJ has room for everyone!

Today is a great day for Mister Colin. The number of pilots who have used the “Aviation English Assessment - Quick Reference Handbook” (www.icaoqrh.com) - to study for the ANAC English test has been growing and growing and has now passed over 5,000 pilots from over 70 countries.

I’d like to thank all the users who have used the course in the last 14 months and I’d like to congratulate everyone who has passed the test after using the course.

Since I launched the course last year the reaction has been amazing. I knew the material was fantastic, but I've been really impressed by the number of people who have taken a little of their time to send me messages saying that it was the course that made all the difference.

Last month, when I participated in the ANAC / ICEA Symposium to celebrate 10 years of the proficiency test in Brazil, I was stopped by people I’d never met who congratulated me on the “Quick Reference Handbook”. This makes me so happy as it confirms that I'm doing the right thing and that all my hard work has been worth it.

The ANAC test has changed, but the course is keeping up with all these changes and is constantly being updated. I will continue to develop new content and update the existing content to meet your needs. You can count on me.

There will be some more announcements soon!

Happy studying and have a good flight!

Mister Colin

It's been a hectic year for Mister Colin. The "English Aviation Assessment - Quick Reference Handbook" published at the end of last year, has been a rousing success and has been adopted by two schools in Brazil as the official course material for Aviation English courses.

The "ICAO Aviation English Test Preparation Course" has also been a remarkable success with over 90% of students passing the test, of which over 13% achieved the top grade. You can read students' feedback of the course here: www.mistercolin.com/recommendations.

The Android and iOS applications have also taken off with more than 3000 downloads in over 70 countries. This has been achieved entirely by word of mouth as no marketing budget was available at that time.

Both the main site - www.mistercolin.com - and the online learning platform - www.icaoqrh.com - were moved to secure servers last month to ensure users' personal information is kept safe.

The online learning platform has really taken off. Although it was designed for the Brazilian market it has now attracted students from other countries in South America and in Asia. Students have been using the material to successfully prepare for the ICAO English Tests in Hong Kong and Argentina.

Both websites are now available in English and Spanish, as well as Portuguese, to meet international demand.

The payment method for the online learning platform has also been changed. Some students were having problems renewing their subscripton with the Brazilian payment system "PagSeguro" so it has now been changed to "Paypal".

In order to access the site the first step is to complete the registration process, then select the course you would like to study and lastly make the payment.  If you pay by "Paypal" you will be registered on the course automatically for 31 days.

If you would still like to pay by using "Pagseguro" you can continue to pay by credit card but the course registration will need to be authorised manually, following confirmation of payment. It's also possible to pay by bank transfer. Please get in touch for further details.

Site renewals are not automatic. After 31 days you will be asked if you wish to renew your subscription. If you do not wish to continue you will not be penalised in any way.

The online learning portal is being continously updated in accordance with changes to the test and feedback from students.

Stay tuned for further announcements.

Lastly I'd like to say thanks to all the pilots and aviation professionals for all their help and feedback over the last 12 months!

Curso online ICAO para a prova da ANAC

The “Aviation English Assessment – Quick Reference Handbook” is an online course for the ICAO English Test administered by the Brazilian Civil Aviation Authority (ANAC).

The Quick Reference Handbook is divided into Sections just like the ICAO Test and focuses on the Six ICAO Proficiencies: Pronunciation; Structure; Vocabulary; Fluency; Comprehension; and Interactions. Throughout the course the student will hear male and female native speakers and radio communications from South America, North America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Oceania so as to train their ear to understand different accents. Standard ICAO phraseology is used throughout the course.

Firstly, It has a quick overview of the test, the places where you can do the test, and looks at a Model Test similar to the one on the ANAC website.

It will then study how best to respond to the questions in "Part I: Aviation Topics" which evaluates fluency. There are a total of forty-nine questions covering all the areas in the test. These are divided into seven categories: experience; aircraft and routine; career; training; flight safety; abnormal situations; the future and weather. Audio recordings of the questions and answers are provided for you to train your responses.

It then explains how to complete "Part II: Interacting as a Pilot" which tests for interaction and "Part III: Unexpected Situations" which assesses comprehension. Again audio recordings of the situations, questions and answers are provided for you to train your responses.

Lastly it explains Part IV of the test "Picture Description and Discussion" which assesses fluency. Audio recordings of the questions and answers are provided for you to train your responses.

You can navigate through the Quick Reference Handbook by clicking on "Next" or "Previous" or you can jump to any page in the course by using the "Chapters" button. You can listen to the audios by clicking on the "Headphones" icon.

The Quick Reference Handbook focuses on techniques to pass the Brazilian ICAO test, the Santos Dumont English Assessment, administered by ANAC, the Brazilian Civil Aviation Authority, and its aim is not to teach Aviation English. The material in the course will be updated in accordance with any future changes to the test.
